Monduli Juu Maasai village

Welcome to Monduli Juu, a district located approx. 50 km/ 31 miles north-west of Arusha. This area is characterized by mountainous terrain and is inhabited primarily by Maasai people. It is comprised of four major villages, and our tours are conducted specifically in the Rift Valley.

Tours are fully customisable; whether you choose an Arusha-area hotel, a homestay (suitable for a small budget) or camping, a half-day or up to a 3 night stay, come immerse yourself in this traditional culture.

Highlights of Monduli Juu Day Trip

  • Trek through the vast Rift Valley, which spreads out in dusty tones of grey, brown and yellow. Within this vast, dry landscape, the Maasai bomas (enclosures) are barely distinguishable and sparsely strewn. In each boma there are a number of huts; each hut is the home to one of the wives of the Village Chief.

  • Take a walk across an ancient crater where Maasai have been grazing their cattle for generations, and visit other Maasai villages. You can also explore the area on two wheels!

  • Hike to Monduli evergreen rainforest, and along the way learn about specific trees such as the Whistling Thorn Acacia, the Maasai Perfume Tree & the Fig Tree, as well as the different species of birds and animals that inhabit the area.

  • An all-day hike to Taresero mountain view peak (approx. 2230m/7316ft) with spectacular views of the neighbouring mountains: Mount Meru, Longido, Ol Donyo Lengai & the surrounding plains.

  • Visit the local Maasai red market on Saturdays. The Maasai gather every Saturday afternoon to sell livestock and purchase supplies for the next week. In the hours before the market begins, scores of young Maasai men walk down the mountain roads to the village with their goats and sheep to be slaughtered or sold.

  • Meet prominent village figures such as the midwife & the herbal doctor. Masai societies all over Eastern Africa are famous for their use of traditional medicine to cure infections and diseases of different kinds, such as malaria, eye infections, sore throats, urinary tract infections, kidney problems, backaches, and headaches. They cure these ailments by using specific plants, using their roots, leaves, or bark.

  • Experience the Maasai villages on two wheels. Cycling provides a novel, active, and adventurous way to experience authentic African villages.

  • Taste the traditional "Nyama Choma" (goat cooked over an open fire) with Maasai warriors in the "Orpul" (Maasai meat camp). Maasai still enjoy traditional Maasai dishes such as ugali (a sticky, mashed potato-like dish made from maize flour), with milk and meat as the main components of every dish. Enjoy the Maasai Barbecue with us: it will be the culinary highlight of your stay at Lalashe campsite!

  • When staying at the Lalashe campsite, you can watch the Maasai slaughter a goat for the barbecue. This is a very unique experience.

  • Maasai Honeymoon; Whether you would like to stay for just one night or a little longer, we can promise you one thing: you will never forget this experience! A typical Maasai house is made out of cow dung, mud, and clay and takes about two months to construct. The house consists of different rooms: one for the parents, the children, guests, and, of course, our calves and goats. The fireplace takes pride of place in the middle of the house.

  • Every bead tells a story; In Maasai culture, intricate patterns and a kaleidoscope of colors reveal a person’s age, status, and journey. Step into a world of tradition by joining our hands-on workshops—where you won't just learn an ancient craft, you'll weave your own piece of Maasai heritage to take home.

  • Immerse yourself in the Monduli Maasai experience by staying in a traditional Maasai house (hut), joining daily activities like collecting firewood from nearby forests—traditionally done by Maasai girls—participating in evening milking, and even dressing in authentic Maasai attire if you wish for a deeper cultural connection.

Why Visit
Monduli Juu?

  • Authentic Cultural Immersion: Engage with local Maasai communities and learn about their traditional way of life, from medicinal plant knowledge to ancient pastoral customs.

  • Panoramic Landscapes: Experience the transition from lush, green highlands to the iconic, arid beauty of the Rift Valley floor.

  • Off-the-Beaten-Path Exploration: Enjoy a more intimate safari experience away from the heavy crowds of the main northern circuit.

Know Before You Go

  • The Terrain: Expect varied elevations. Monduli Juu is mountainous, meaning paths can be steep and uneven. Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support are essential.

  • The Climate: Because of the altitude, it is significantly cooler here than in Arusha. Mornings and evenings can be chilly (around 12°C to 15°C), so layering is key. Don't forget a windproof jacket.

  • Cultural Etiquette: You will be walking through ancestral Maasai lands. We ask that guests respect local customs; always ask your guide before taking photos of individuals or bomas (homesteads).

  • Hydration & Sun: Even in the cooler highlands, the equatorial sun is strong. Carry at least 2 liters of water and apply high-SPF sunscreen.

Walking Safari Highlights

A walking safari in the Rift Valley is a sensory experience that vehicles simply can’t replicate. Here is what to look forward to:

  • The "Medicine Cabinet" Walk: Discover the ancient botanical knowledge of the Maasai. Your guide will point out specific trees and shrubs used for centuries to treat everything from toothaches to fevers.

  • Breathtaking Escarpment Views: Reach vantage points that offer a 360-degree panorama of the Great Rift Valley floor, with the distant silhouettes of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro visible on clear days.

  • Highland Birding: The mix of forest and open scrubland makes this a haven for bird enthusiasts. Keep your binoculars ready for the Hartlaub's Turaco or the Augur Buzzard soaring on the thermals.

  • Encounters with the Pastoral Life: Witness the daily rhythm of Maasai life as herders move cattle across the plains. It is a rare chance to see a landscape where humans and wildlife have coexisted for generations.

  • The Silent Track: Experience the "small things"—identifying animal tracks in the dust, observing dung beetles at work, and hearing the wind whistle through the whistling thorn acacia trees.
