Trek through the vast Rift Valley that spreads out in dusty tones of grey, brown and yellow. Within this vast, dry landscape, the Maasai bomas (enclosures) are barely distinguishable and sparsely strewn. In each boma there are a number of huts; each hut is the home to one of the wives of the Village Chief, a Maasai Warrior.

A delegation of boys, aged 14 to 16 years of age, would travel across their section land for about four months announcing the formation of their new age-set. The boys are accompanied by a group of elders spearheading the formation of a new age-set. A collection of 30-40 houses are built for the initiating boys. The houses are located in one large kraal chosen by the Oloiboni (prophet). This is where all boys across the region will be united and initiated. @dimbwiiiculture

Traditionally, the Maasai rely on meat, milk and blood from cattle for protein and caloric needs. People drink blood on special occasions. It is given to a circumcised person (o/esipolioi), a woman who has given birth (entomononi) and the sick (oltamueyiai). Also, on a regular basis drunk elders, ilamerak, use the blood to alleviate intoxication and hangovers. Blood is very rich in protein and is good for the immune system. However, its use in the traditional diet is waning due to the reduction of livestock numbers. @dimbwiiiculture

The Maasai live in Kraals arranged in a circular fashion. The fence around the kraal is made of acacia thorns, which prevent lions from attacking the cattle. It is a man's responsibility to fence the kraal. While women construct the houses. Traditionally, kraals are shared by an extended family. However, due to the new land management system in the Maasai region, it is not uncommon to see a kraal occupied by a single family. @dimbwiiiculture

They are one of the very few tribes who have retained most of their traditions, lifestyle and lore. In common with the wildlife with which they co-exist, the Maasai need a lot of land. Unlike many other tribes in Tanzania, the Maasai are semi-nomadic and pastoral: they live by herding cattle and goats. @dimbwiiiculture

Maasai (not Masai) is the correct spelling of this noble tribe: it means people speaking maa. Masai was the incorrect spelling of the British settlers and has remained in current use. The Maasai have always been special. Their bright red robes set them apart visually. Spear in hand, they are calm and courageous regardless of the danger. @dimbwiiiculture

Half day trip “A” – Climbing the escarpment

The trip starts in Mfereji village from where you visit a Maasai boma. From there you walk through typical tree savannah to the foot of the escarpment. Climbing the “Kona Saba” (Seven Corners) escarpment is not difficult if you wear good walking shoes. From the escarpment you can oversee the wonderful panorama from Rift Valley, over Kitumbeine, Longido, up to Mount Kilimanjaro. Arrival at the “Norkuman” camping site from where you will be picked up.
