Home>Manyara National Park

Location and How to Get There

Lake Manyara has beautiful landscapes with the eastern and western escarpments of the Rift Valley encircling the lake. A distance of about 2 hours (130 km/75 miles) of well-paved roads is required to get to Lake Manyara from Arusha. Flight time from Arusha Airport (ARK) is 20 minutes or a 45-minute flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). A distance of about 1.5 hours is required to get to Ngorongoro Crater from Lake Manyara, an exciting drive up the western escarpment of the Rift Valley.

Size

Manyara is 250 sq miles (330 Kms?) of which one-third is land (22 sq miles / 100 Kms2) the remainder being part of Lake Manyara. It is Tanzania's third smallest National Park)

Wildlife and Natural Highlights

This national park is home to a resident forest, which the underground water forest feeds, thereby making the park generally green throughout the year. This attracts both migratory and wetland birds. Two-thirds of the lake is dominated by shallow alkaline-saline soda waters. These unique waters are formed by Rift Valley heat causing rapid evaporation of Manyara's waters, leaving high concentrations of saline (salt) and sodium carbonate. This creates an ideal environment for the microorganism cyanobacteria to thrive, which produces blue-green benthic algae. This attracts flamingos that feed on it. Whereas these caustic waters can reach pH levels of 9, too toxic for most other creatures, the flamingos have adapted to it, and the benthic algae provide a year-round food source for them. Manyara National Park's most common species, in addition to flamingos, are large troops of baboons, blue/sykes monkeys, vervet monkeys, tree-climbing lions, kudus, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, wildebeest, zebras, elephants, impalas, Grant's and Thomson's gazelles, lions, cheetahs, warthogs, leopards, hyrax, elands, bushbucks, waterbucks, and dik-diks.

Activities

Mto Wa Mbu is the town closest to the national park, with a population consisting of 18,000 individuals from 85 diverse tribes. This makes it one among the culturally diverse towns on the continent. Due to the diverse cultures, it is a hub for diverse multicultural events. Activities undertaken in Mto Wa Mbu village include walking safaris, biking, forest hikes on the western escarpments of the Rift Valley, bicycling tours around Lake Manyara to the waterfalls for the fit ones, canoeing, and brewery tours. In addition to game drive tours, Manyara NP offers a walking safari tour within the park as well as night game-drive tours.
