There are some excellent chances to break up a car-based safari and stretch your legs in the Highlands region of the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area (NCA). About 40 kilometers northeast of its well-known neighbor, the Ngorongoro Crater, is the breathtaking but little-known Empakaai Crater.

Tanzania's most active volcano, Oldoinyo Lengai, is visible from the moment you arrive at Empakaai, along with breathtaking views of the Empakaai Crater. After that, you'll start the 30- to 45-minute descent into the crater through dense, mountainous forest with an NCA ranger and an experienced guide. Excellent birdwatching is available around the lake on the crater floor, along with the opportunity to spot flamingos and large game like buffalo, hyenas, and elephants. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and a respectable degree of fitness is necessary.
